CHHS Mixed Chorus in Vancouver March 1962

Thank you to Alex Hawkins (1964) for submitting this story and these photos!

In March 1962, the CHHS Mixed Chorus went to Vancouver by CPR overnight Pullman-car service to participate in a music festival involving musical individuals and groups from the USA and Canada.  We stayed in the Hotel Vancouver, and along the way, a couple of formal photographs were taken of the chorus.  I unearthed these from an archive held at UBC.  I can identify many of the people in these photos, and I hope others can identify many more.  I was in Grade 10 at this time, and this trip was one of the most memorable events of my life.  Mr. Erickson was at his most dynamic during my years (1961-1964), and I know that all of us were at our best as well at that time.  As I recall, the performance we gave in Vancouver was impressive, and I know that the camaraderie we shared contributed to the bond that we felt to each other, to Mr. Erickson, and to the music.  Many of us had just completed the production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe in February, and we felt we were on a roll.  Please enjoy these photos, and as I said, please try to identify as many people as you can.
